Street Names 1769 (Ferrar's directory)

Castle Street (p) - runs between Thomand Bridge and the Parade.
The Parade (p) - links Castle St. to present day Nicholas St.
Main Street - ran along present day Nicholas St., Mary St. over Baal's Bridge and onto Broad St. in Irishtown.
Newgate - old city gate which stood on Nicholas St. at junction of Newgate St and St.Francis Place.
Smyth Street - also known as Broad lane ran from Bishop's Palace to Dominic St.
Barrack Street (p) - runs beside St. Mary's Convent, once incorporated what is now Bishop St.
Peter's Cell (p) - site of Augustinian Nunnery, now on Bishop St.
Newgate Street - links Nicholas St and Crosbie Row, now known as Newgate Lane.
Peter's Street (p) - connects Nicholas St with Bishop Street.
Bow Lane - now called St. Augustine Place, links Nicholas St to Merchant's Quay.
Quay Lane - now Bridge St.
Old Quay - now Merchant's Quay.
George's Quay (p)
Creagh Lane (p) -
connects Mary St with George's Quay.
Shambles Lane - now Meat Market Lane off Mary St.
Fish Lane (p) - connects Mary's St and Sir Harry's Mall.
Little Fish Lane (p) - located near Baal's Bridge on Mary St.

Irishtown

Main Street - now Broad St.
Mungret Street (p)
John Street (p)
Back Lane
- possible formed junction with John St.
Johnsgate - now known as John's Gate near John's Square.
New Square - now John's Square.
Church Street (p) - short street beside St. Johns Church.
East Watergate - near Baal's Bridge facing east.
West Watergate - near Baal's Bridge facing west.
West Watergate Lane - leading from Broad St to West Watergate.
Francis Street (p) - off Mungret St.
Palmer Street - between John's Square and Mungret St.
James Street (p) - off Gerald Griffin St at rear of John's Square.

Outside city walls

North Strand - now Clancy Strand and O'Callaghan Strand.
Thomondgate (p) - suburb
Russel's Quay - now Charlotte's Quay.
Pery Street - unknown location.
Lock Quay (p) - between Baal's Bridge and Canal Lock Gates.
Change Lane - near Garryowen Road
Mardyke - marshland between West Watergate and the Customs House.
Pennywell (p)
St. Francis Abbey- suburb
